Overview.

Our critical care unit is the hospital's safety net for the sickest patients, staffed 24/7 by intensivist consultants and specialist nurses at the highest UK staffing ratios. Care covers post-operative high-risk patients, severe sepsis, respiratory failure and multi-organ failure, with daily multidisciplinary rounds and family conferences built into the schedule. Step-down beds support a smooth recovery from critical illness back to the ward.

Questions before you book.

The intensivist team reviews referrals from emergency, theatre and the ward, admitting patients whose physiology cannot be safely supported elsewhere.

Yes, with structured visiting and a daily family update from the bedside team. We encourage family presence wherever it supports the patient.

Most stays are 2–7 days. Complex cases (severe sepsis, multi-organ failure) can be longer. The team gives daily updates on prognosis and plan.

A halfway environment between ICU and the ward, with closer monitoring than a regular ward but not full ICU intensity, supporting recovery.

Some patients need a ventilator for breathing support. The team explains why, the plan to wean, and any alternatives like non-invasive ventilation.

Yes, with compassion, time and shared decision-making. We support families through difficult decisions in a private, calm environment.
